FOSSIL FUELS. Definition. Fossil fuel is a term used to describe a group of energy sources that were formed from ancient plants and organisms during the Carboniferous Period, approximately to million years ago California Energy Commission. Fossil fuels get their name from their formation from dead plant and animal matter that was compressed and heated over millions of years. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, fossil fuels are used to generate more than 85 percent of the energy used by the country. Coal alone provides half the electricity in the United States.

Over the last decade, there has been a staggering fall in the price of solar and wind power, and of the lithium-ion batteries used to store energy. This has led to rapid expansion of these technologies, even though they are still used much less than fossil fuels: in , for instance, sun and wind produced just 6 percent of the world’s electric supply, but they made up 45 percent of the. Fossil Fuel Types and Formation; Consumption; Fossil fuels is the term given to energy sources with a high hydrocarbon content (see Chapter 1 for a review of hydrocarbon molecules) found in the Earth’s crust that formed in the geologic past and can be burned to release their energy. They were formed from prehistoric plants and animals that lived hundreds of millions of years.

The book, ‘Climate Change Reconsidered II: Fossil Fuels’ is available online for free, in PDF format, at This publication consists of a large book ( pages) including a 23 page Summary for Policymakers which is also presented as a separate booklet. This book begins with a chapter describing some of the economic and environmental consequences of America's fossil-fuel-based economy. It makes the case that, despite some progress in reducing pollution from fossil fuels, no lasting cure for the deteriorating environment - in particular, the looming threat of global warming - is possible without developing alternative fuel sources.

I first heard about Alex Epstein’s book The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels via an unsurprisingly fawning review over at the SkeptEco premise is so ludicrous that normally I wouldn’t read it, never mind review it.

There is no “moral case for fossil fuels”, just as there was no “moral case for slavery” in The rationalization, power professional Alex Epstein argues in The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels, is that we often hear just one aspect of the story.

We’re taught to assume solely of the negatives of fossil fuels, their dangers and uncomfortable side effects, however not their positives—their distinctive potential to. A major portion of fossil fuels usage is for stationary heat and power generation, nearly all of which require some form of pollution control.

Of these fuels, coal is the primary source for power generation, followed by natural gas with a very small amount of petroleum-based fuels.

In less than a decade, activism against the fossil fuel industry has exploded across the globe. While environmentalists used to focus on legislative goals, such as carbon emissions trading or renewable energy policies, today the most prominent activists directly attack the fossil fuel industry.

ists’ moral case against fossil fuels—refute its central idea that fossil fuels destroy the planet. Because if we don’t refute that idea, we accept it, and if we accept that fossil fuels are destroying the planet, the only logical conclusion is to cease new development and slow down existing development as File Size: KB.
